A focal point is a landscape feature that will draw your eye to it first. It is a strong element and is a sort of centerpiece of your backyard. It could be a piece of art, a pergola with a patio below or a dramatic water feature.
We were taught in design school that when you open up the door to your backyard, you should see a focal point. The rest of your space plays off of this feature. I believe a pergola and patio combination creates a focal point perfectly.
A pergola defines a room in your garden. It quite literally defines a box that has a roof and four implied walls. Architects make interior rooms, while Landscape Architecture is about making exterior rooms. I will discuss this room concept in another blog.
As stated earlier, another focal point could be a well built water feature. Imagine a waterfall spilling into a pondless area with a patio with comfortable chairs and flower pots all around. This would be your initial attraction for your Colorado backyard.
