Ornamental grasses are a popular choice for Colorado Springs landscape designers, especially at Sundown Landscaping. Grasses have such a visual appeal and are low maintenance plants.
There are many choices for your garden, from small varieties a foot tall to towering ones with seed heads that can exceed ten foot tall. They offer an appeal that other plants cannot, especially moving so easily with the wind. Grasses are generally easy to grow, as wildlife rarely cause damage and if given enough room to grow, are generally disease free.
Ornamental grasses are essentially perennials, in that when we get the first heavy frost, they go dormant. At this time, the green blades will loss their colors and turn varying shades of dry grass. In fact, I like to refer to them as “dry flower arrangements” when they turn color. They are perfect for winter interest as long as we don’t get a heavy wet snow, which breaks them down. To complete their season, they should be cut back 4-9 inches from the ground, depending on the variety. Please remember to use gloves when cutting them back as the blades can be very sharp.
