There is a reason that gardening remains a favorite pastime for adults. Having your hands in warm soil is heaven on earth, in my humble opinion.
Here is a hack that I have learned from almost five decades of working in my own gardens, as well as the hundreds and hundreds of gardens for my customers.
Texture is the secret behind a beautiful planting design.
The trick for a more successful garden is the intentional desire for visual appeal. One easy way to do this is to have many different color in the garden on a continuing basis. However, not all of us are lucky enough to live in south Florida or Mexico. Their climates allow for color all year long.
Here in Colorado Springs we must rely on color and texture, even in the winter when the deciduous plants have gone dormant. Simply put, textural design involves the combinations of plants, much like a good recipe calls for the proper combination of spices. A few examples are as follows:
- A tall, thin ornamental grass next to a low growing juniper.
- Plants with large leaves next to ones with smaller foliage.
- Plants with different colored or variegated leaves. For example, a Red Barberry or Limemound Spirea against Boxwoods.
- Different sized plants can add visual interest to your garden.
