Mulch is defined as material (such as leaves, bark or compost) spread around a plant to enrich and/or insulate the soil. This is a traditional definition where mulch is intended decompose into humus, which feeds the plant. As we all know however, here in Colorado Springs rock is everywhere.
Mulch can be placed into two categories here in Colorado Springs- organic and non organic. The organic mulch will breakdown and decompose. inorganic rock mulch will not breakdown, but still serves a valuable purpose.
Here are six benefits of using mulch:
- It improves soil moisture and helps to prevent plants from drying out too fast.
- It reduces soil erosion and soil compaction.
- It helps to maintain optimal soil temperatures by creating a barrier from the heat and cold.
- Increases soil nutrition as it decomposes by improving soil structure, thus providing better drainage and better use of nutrients.
- Reduces the amount of weeds that will come up.
- It protects shallow rooted plants from freeze damage.
Any mulch material has its pros and cons. We can discuss this more during your free landscape consultation.
